Why am I being sent a new sim?

I tried to change my pay monthly plan last night as I have an upgrade option.
Nothing has happened on my app to indicate this change which is unusual given my past experiences.
I was therefore surprised to get an email saying my new sim is on its way.
Any ideas what is happening?
