Phone Not Connecting to a Network in India

HII landed in India last night and turned my phone on. It 'searched' for a network but didnt connect.  I have tried turning it off an on again and switching airplane mode on and off - each time it searches for a network and then fails to find one.......

Hi going away in a few weeks and just would like to know if I buy the roam abroad add on do I get unlimited data like I would in the UK as I'm on a unlimited data contract and also is there a charge for using my phone as a hotspot for my kids devices...
