14.4% price increase can I cancel my contract?

According to the citizens advice they say the following

Your provider has to give you 30 days’ notice if they’re putting up the price of your contract. You have the legal right to cancel the contract within those 30 days without having to pay a fee. Contact the company and say you’re cancelling within the allowed 30 days’ notice of a price increase.”

Any legal people here can let me know if this means I can cancel my sim only contract?

thanks for your help 🙂

Yup, I’m just off the phone to them as my bill has gone up by £11 this month and although the support person was cool, he could only get me £22 off of next months bill, there was nothing else he could do and all 4 of my lines are in contract til 2024, so I can only imagine that by 2024 I’ll be paying £100+ for my bill each month, either that or a £200+ early cancellation fee. I’ve been with them for 10 years but by 2024 I will be getting rid of 3 lines and will jump on over to another provider who can really help if folk find it hard to pay their monthly bill.

I’m a pay monthly customer, pay monthly should be pay monthly but cancel at anytime, not pay monthly and be held to ransom for 24 months.

Leanne_T  what help can ee provide that will work for me and others ?  Will they let me get out of my contract with no fee, will they let me downgrade my lines so that I’m on cheaper packages.  I don’t think ee can help us, or should I say, I think ee don’t want to help us as it will cost them money.

Please provide us with some examples of what ee can do for us if we can’t afford to pay our monthly bill now.

I think we all know it’s not just ee, but they should atleast have a pay monthly package with no minimum term so that when folk find it hard to pay a bill when prices rise, they have the freedom to change their package or to go to another cheaper provider without having to pay a huge early cancellation fee.

Pay as you go looks very enticing now.

I think what he mean is price increase under unaware circumstances ,I will react the same , imagine someone take your money without your permission

@Kane77   But it’s not without your permission you agreed to the contract and the T&Cs of that contract.   While a 14.4% increase is high and I think all customers don’t want to see such a high increase that increases is based on the T&Cs you agreed to CPI+ 3.9%.   Yes EE could have at least dropped the 3.9% and I think they should only have it on CPI.   Let’s just hope that CPI isn’t as high next year as this will effect all networks not just EE.

Hello, a quick question. I know the mid year price increase was expected but did not think it will be after four month of signing the contract. I upgrade in end of November last year so seems quite unfair. I always assumed any indexation uplift can only be applied after 12 months of a contract?

So in my case the increase should have been applied from December 23 onward. Can someone please confirm if my understanding is correct and EE can increase the price after four months ?

Many thanks

Hi @Grandmaster80  unfortunately you are wrong. You'll have two in contract price rises during your 24 month minimum term.

@Grandmaster80  it is not wise to assume, better to read the terms you agree to,

PRICE CHANGES 2023

Each year, we adjust the prices of our products and services in-line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation, plus 3.9%.

When we work out our prices, we use the December CPI rate published in January. For December 2022, the CPI rate was 10.5%. This means that the majority of our customers will see a price increase of 14.4% (which is 10.5% plus 3.9%), or just over £1 per week on average.

These price changes take effect on or after the 31 March 2023.

Thanks. So each year is not in customer prospective rather than company's.

Lesson learned for future then. Never take a contract on black Friday or Xmas deals and wait until April!

In the industry I work , most of the time we successfully challenged these dodgy clauses when the supplier increases prices within 12 months but would I bother to waste my time here not sure.
