Hi,
I want to add a usb hard drive to my router. I am already concerned that the ee router only supports a security protocol that is over half a decade out of date.
If I set my windows pc's back to the year 2015 by enabling SMB1/CIFS I can see the drive, however all the instructions on here and the router suggest that you can password protect the fileshare - but they all reference very old firmware, it seems the only thing that is possible now is to change the usb drives shared name? Surely this can't be correct? Is it really true that the EE engineers have thought to themselves "let's only use the obsolete SMB1 system - now, how can we make that less secure? I know - let's remove the ability to use password protect it!"
Absolute Shambles.
If anyone has a workaround for this or if there is a "Hidden" config page on the router please let me know.

Hi @thamesman.
If there is any possible way around this one of our broadband experts in the community will know.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge of this will be along shortly to assist you.

Apologies for the time taken to reply - Have been away for Christmas and had no signal / wifi
It is a Smart hub
Firmware: v0.06.01.08190-EE
Firmware Updated: Tue Dec 8 00:33:28 2020
Board Version: 01
Software Variant: -
Boot Loader: 0.0.3-EE (Mon Dec 4 17:32:53 2017)
Is there a way to downgrade the firmware back to the one that had password capability or is it possible to put openWRT or something similar on it?

There is no pwd protection on the EE SH's USB & never has been, only on its predecessor, the EE BrightBox. What "instructions on here" are you referring to? You must mean for the EE BrightBox.

Sorry, I thought they were the same thing.
It does seem strange that they would bring out newer hardware that makes your entire home network less secure than their older hardware.

No, they are just 2 diff models of router, the earlier 1 presumably to EE's spec., the later to BT's.
