Am trying to port number to another provider (UW who use EE network) and after a week, we still cannot get the line working. UW have checked and rechecked (so they say) their end and it is saying live, all sorted. After being told the handset was unlocked several times by EE, we then discovered that it wasn't due to a handset loggingwrror on their system (or smething like that) and the request was put through on a form by an EE employee. After almost 72 hours I chased and we were told that it was sorted their end and to go on to EE/appleunlock to complete the process. Have updated the phone systems, put new UW SIM back in and switched on but it's still not working. Is step 2 vital? Backing up and wiping the phone to reset and then reloading data comes with a few difficulties and as nothing else has worked, I am loath to try something that may just cause a whole load more pain. I've spent hours on the phone with UW and the times and stress and interference with life/work is incredible. And the lack of a handset for my family member (it's their phone we're trying to sort) means they can't access bank accounts, work details and a load of stuff that is making life incredibly difficult now. Can anyone think of anything else that might be happening or suggest any other actions? We've checked SIM numbers, IMEI, PAC codes literally dozens of times.
Solved! See the answer below or view the solution in context.

@FlipFlopps19 If it’s an iPhone you don’t need to do anything it’s all done off the device and then set to the device by Apple as they control the locks on iPhones. Can you put a different network sim in the device ie a 02 or Vodaphone sim. If these work then put your new network sim in the device and test to see if it works. I think you’ll find trying to use the UW sim as the first sim the issue. iPhones only complete the unlock with a sim from a mobile provider that sells the iPhone.

Thank you.
We're going to try that later when we have another iphone and SIM in the house. It's been a totally nightmare.
Something is clearly happening as when you ring the number, it goes to voicemail so it's connecting to one of the networks somewhere but we can't access the voicemail or make/receive calls and texts.
Can use whatsapp over wifi which is a saving grace otherwise we wouldn't be in contact at all.

Is there a solution to this then because neither EE or UW seem to have one?
