Calls from similar number

Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.

Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.

I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

I have had exactly the same been happening! Nearly identical number to mine with the last three digits different each time. What is going on EE!???

Enough people have informed you on here. We shouldn’t be signposted to go elsewhere. People have very busy, full lives and don’t have the time to be passed around. There’s over 130 messages on here about this issue. Please just get it looked into ASAP, rather than signposting to the care team. This should be enough for there to be a serious investigation.

Hi @MC339,

Welcome to the EE Community. 🙂

Number spoofing, where the caller ID is changed to mimic another number, is a worldwide problem. Both the UK and international regulators are working with the telecoms industry to solve this problem.

Please see Call spoofing for more information.

Just registered to say i am on o2 and having the same,  last 3 digits different.  The rest the same.

You need to download a number blocker that has wild card blocking,  or the ability to block a string of numbers based on what you give it.

For example i would add the numbers to ban as 07756 988 XXX

That way you don't get the call,  the app rejects it and your number gets taken off the lists scammers use.

Do the scammers manage to do any harm if you texted them back to see who it was do you know?

@MC339

We wouldn't recommend getting back in touch if you suspect the call may be from an unwanted caller. This can let the caller know that they have found an active number, which could potentially be passed on to other phishing or marketing callers.

Thanks.

Chris.

Yesterday I noticed I had a call from a number that was similar to mine in the first 7 digits, only the last 4 digits were different, then today same thing but the last 4 digits again were different although the 8th digit was same as mine too but I figure that was just by chance but fact is someone is somehow spoofing the first 7 digits of my phone number and clearly this is seems to be a new thing as everyone for the past couple of months is getting this A LOT judging by the online forums i'm reading today. It's time phone companies did more to protect people from these nuisance calls, I'm sick of it. I've even lately been getting text messages telling me my bank has made a money transfer and to follow a link even though i'm not with those banks. I'm not even on social media so they can't have got my info through there and rarely if ever share my phone number out so how the heck are they even getting my number?

Yes, I’ve had texts from one of the numbers saying I called them and they even texted me a screenshot of my missed call (but no others calls, just blank white after my number) and I have never ever called or seen that number. It was nearly identical to my number. I’ve escaped an abusive relationship and I’m scared it could be them. EE need to provide much more help regarding this!

Hi all,

I'd recommend taking a look at our Call Spoofing Support Article for more information on this.

We wouldn't recommend calling these numbers back.

Jon

What happens if I did call them back!?
