Calls from similar number

Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.

Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.

I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

I've been getting this the past two days, I answered the first one and it was a guy claiming I've phoned him and when I said i'd not made any calls all day he asked if someone could have used my phone to make a phone call.. errr no mate because my phones been in my wagon cab with me all day.. 😂

I blocked the number but I've then since had 2 more calls today from basically identical numbers to mine that I've just let ring out and blocked them.

I have had exactly the same problem - two callers in the last 24 hours, both with the same first 7 digits as my mobile number, but different ends.

Neither left a voicemail. I returned the call of the second caller about 2 minutes after they rang me; a man answered and said he must have accidentally called me and then asked when he had called me, apologised and ended the call.

All very weird and feels like some kind of scam is underfoot!

@mdc1983uk  I think you are right - potentially a chain of weird activity. I received two calls - called the one number back and told them I was returning their call (because I was) - after reading all of these comments, now I have no idea if that person was scamming me or if they now think I was scamming them!?!

There is no point blocking numbers, they are randomly generated. No point in changing your number, there is no guarantee this won't carry on with a different number. This isn't a data or security breach, the caller doesn't have any of your details. It is inconvenient and the simple remedy is don't answer calls from numbers similar to your own, I don't know of anyone being scammed out of anything, most times if you answer - not recommended - the line goes dead. Obviously using this random method will result in your number being generated sometimes, which I imagine is the reason for the "You just called me?" response. Worst case scenario this is an automated phone dialler checking which numbers are live. Absolutely nothing EE - or any network - can do but I agree the customer service responses are generic, uninformative and pretty much useless.

I’m having this exact same issue, just the last 3 digits that are different. Received from several different numbers the past few weeks.
Most without any verbal response, some with a confused reaction just as mine.
Step up your game EE and stop giving the same lousy generic responses. There is clearly a serious security breach.

I’ve been receiving calls from fake numbers 1 or 2 digits from mine for the last week. My boyfriend has been receiving the same for a few weeks. I today received a text off a stranger asking why I had pranked him?  I hadn’t

Had the same across EE and our work phones with Vodafone.

Automated messages of your National insurance number has been compromised, from similar numbers to my mobile number, and just had a call from another similar number saying they were returning my call, again with the yes you have called, and no worries comment from him.

A colleague has had numerous calls saying they he has rang them and even that he was trying to spam them.

Seem to be something going around over all networks and is all very odd.

I have had 3 in total, i answered the first one and then I ignored 2 and I've not had any since that so maybe it's best to just ignore any numbers similar to your own.

We are getting this at least twice a day on my wife’s EE number, similar mobile apart from last three digits. I have two O2 numbers and not happening on those so only happening on EE, about time it was investigated EE as i dont want to change my number of 10 years
