Calls from similar number

Hi.. today I received a call from a very similar number to mine just a couple end digits off.. the guy said he was returning a call I just made to him (which I hadn't) and then I told him I had not called him and he said OK no worries bye.

Thinking this was an anomaly of some sort I went on with my day.. then when I was away from my phone around an hour later another different number very similar to mine I have a missed call from.. no message left.

I am not sure what the scam could be here..is someone else somehow using my number to call people?

so again why is there no trace of this in vodafones forums? nobody that I know on Vodafone or on any other UK network is facing this issue.

I have a 2nd line on virgin mobile which I recently ported over from BT mobile. I've never had that issue on that line, only my EE number.

Sorry to burst your bubble here, but I'm on Vodafone and this same thing is happening to me. I ended up here after Googling the symptom.

@mattyulebennett you're not bursting my bubble, you're delusional or as your new account more like an EE staffer trying to throw people off the scent or a troll with nothing else better to do.

I also did a google search and never found a trace of issues on other networks.

EE need to come out and address why this issue is happening and what they are doing to stop it.

My dude, I didn't have an account because I'm a Vodafone customer. Just trying to be helpful!

I am having the same problem! I had 2 calls today from numbers that were the same as my number just the last 3 digits were different...I picked up and a guy said “I missed a call from you” and was extremely creepy. I hadn’t clocked by this point that the numbers were practically identical to my own!
Does anyone know what’s going on?

Hi @Katiya,

Welcome to the EE Community. 🙂

I'm sorry to hear you have been receiving nuisance calls. If a caller has mentioned that they received missed call from your number that you didn't make, it could be that a nuisance caller has altered their caller ID to make the call appear that it was made from your number. This practice is known as 'number spoofing' and is often used by nuisance callers to increase the likelihood of their calls being answered.

You can find out more about number spoofing on the Ofcom website.

I’m on o2, ended up here from a google search and nothing on the o2 Forums, but can confirm it’s not just EE!

I’ve had calls from 5 different variations of my number in the past 2 weeks, I contacted o2 support and they told me to reset my network settings (due to potential call congestion) on my phone and to check the security of my account. I can confirm that resetting the network hasn’t helped as it’s happened again today.

I would normally just block the numbers but it’s hard when they’re constantly changing!

I’m assuming there won’t be a resolution to this but relieved to know it’s not just myself dealing with it.

The exact same thing has been happening to me for the past month or so. I’ve never answered one of the calls because I’ve always thought it was bizarre that a number almost identical to mine keeps ringing but it’s getting more and more frustrating, and there’s only so many times you can keep blocking numbers.

The phone numbers are all exactly the same to mine except the last three digits. They never leave a message and usually call in the morning. I’ve rang one back after withholding my number and the person at the other end just said “helloooooo” in a strange voice then hung up. So I gathered it’s a scam or something I don’t want to waste my time with. But seen as this is happening to a lot of EE users on this forum, do we have an answer for what this is or how to permanently stop it? Thanks.

Hi , same happening with me . Quite concerning the volume . The onus should be on EE to look into and eradicate and not us as customers to put up with and block as received or change our numbers! GDPR being breached !

Definitely not just EE, I'm on Sky Mobile, had the issue for the last week and again Google brought me to this thread.
