EE Smart Hub Plus poor range and connection strengh compared to BT Smart Hub 2

Monaco24

Our BT broadband contract came to an end so we've moved fully to EE now and been sent out an EE Smart Hub Plus to replace our BT Smart Hub 2. There seems to be a considerable reduction in range with the new EE box and an unstable or poor wifi connection in parts of the house that were fine with the BT box. All in all it feels like a downgrade, has anyone else had similar issues with the EE boxes?

I'm tempted just to send it back and stick with the older BT box but not sure if that will cause any issues down the line..

Thanks

Hi @Mustrum @JimM11 @jon_1103 - read what you are saying here… I am still a bit confused: @Mustrum said that the EE Smart Hub Plus was packed into it’s box and he is using TP-Link AXE5400. I checked the characteristics of the hub and TP-link and it seems the latter is more advanced in both speeds and coverage. My current speed to the Hub is 900 + and the speed to the devices via Smart Discs is around 120-150.

What I didn’t understand was: @Mustrum did you connect the TP-Link AXE5400 straight to your modem? I.e. not to the EE HUB?

@NatalieBark Pretty sure @Mustrum is an Asus user!

@NatalieBark   you need to go back and read the posts again.

I gave advice and the link to EE's Help page for using a third party router.

Unless you have Digital Voice or TV, there is no requirment to use the EE Router, and I imagine the TP Link poster just plugged it into the ONT, which is an optical modem.

I’m the TP link poster, yes that’s all I did, along with entering the username and password during the set up.

I do have TV with EE but I have an Apple TV so no need to use the EE router.

@jon_1103 , so you plugged TP-LINK straight to modem and you are saying you got rid both of Smart Hub & TV box and use Apple TV… I have Apple TV too. So I understand you can have there an app for TNT sports (which is in my package) and NOW TV… And the prime channels you’d watch on BBC player? So, if I do the same how my bill will change? My first bill was 55.73 for Broadband + 5.50 TV?

@jon_1103 Let you run with this now as heading TV way if you wish, copy link to the other post from OP to give you the FULL picture.

Can I use a TP-LINK RE 550 1900 wifi extender with my Smart Hub? - The EE Community

@NatalieBarkI've never had any EE TV boxes, I've just got the Apple TV which was supplied by EE.

Correct, I unplugged the Smart Hub Plus from the ONT modem and connected the new TP Link router. During the set up it auto established the connection type and I just entered the BT username in using this link
EE use the unicast protocol on their Apple TV's compared to multicast protocol for EE TV boxes, which is why you can get rid of the SH+ router.

Did you get your Apple TV from EE or was it an existing device you owned?

On my Apple TV I use the EE TV app for live TV and I use the Discovery+ app for TNT sports. I have to use the D+ app as my TNT sports subscription is not direct with EE, even though I get it free from EE via my mobile plan.

In short, as long as you subscribe to EE for any TV services and have the EE supplied Apple TV box then those channels will be available via the EETV app, otherwise you just use the apps available via the Apple App store.

I hope that makes sense?

I was recently ‘upgraded’ to the new smart plus hub. Range of 500 metres I was told. I too have to use wifi extenders (as I had to before). They regularly drop out, one minute the app states there is an excellent signal, next minute it’s a poor signal and the extender is ‘in the wrong place’. Alternates between the three extenders throughout the day usually with 1 or 2 of them showing poor signal. Hub continually triggering a line fault. 6 visits by Open Reach so far, 3rd SHPlus - just been sent another Smart Hub 2 to use as OR and EE can’t identify or won’t admit where the fault is (network or new router). OR claim there have been hundreds of complaints they have dealt with, EE deny the issue is their new router. Shambles……

I also 'upgraded' to EE from Plusnet and the new router is rubbish compared to the older Plusnet Hub Two. EE wouldn't help apart from asking me to pay for extenders which weren't necessary previously. I can't find a simple guide to swap the EE for the old Plusnet Hub, is it possible and could anyone post a guide please? Really disappointed with EE's response on this.

@Vee-8 EE supply and support fully there own equipment, and also give information for allowing third party routers to be connected without any support. Have you looked on the plusnet site for assistance to use there router on an EE/BT service.
