I ordered a Netgear Nighthawk (for direct debit) to replace my old Osprey (pay monthly). I paid, but was emailed with the note that there was a discrepancy and to phone 0800 079 0531 to resolve.
40 phone calls later through this week, still unable to get through, so presumably there aren't many people on the phones at the moment. Online chat seemed unavailable, and there's no email address. What other routes can I use - not even sure how to cancel the order, if there's no way to get in touch.

Call them and stay on the line.
There are less staff working to comply with social distancing. You just need to be patient and stay on the line and wait your turn.

Fair enough, and good timing. for the first time it hasn't come up with the message to phone back later, so I'll hold on.
