New EE TV Pro Box affects broadband speed

IanH9

So, new box setup yesterday, 301 channels found.

However, when the box is switched on the broadband speeds plummet and makes internet access from other devices very slow and unreliable. So, I unplugged thr box and re-installed my old BT TV box. Problem goes away.

Is the box supposed to be downloading lots of data after a fresh install (and why) or is it a genuine fault ?

TIA.

Hi @Peter_W , I subscription for one box only.

When I switch off the EE TV Pro box and replace it with the old BT TV box I have no issues at all.

The issue started with the EE TV Pro box.

Hello, Thanks for getting back.

No we ARE using the new EE router which came with the new TV boxes. However, the wifi is turned off on the router as we are using unify routers around the house for our wireless.

@GraemeCor

And so flooding the LAN with multicast packets whenever the Box Pro or Mini is switched on, even if these are wired to the EE router - and most especially if they aren’t (which would be unsupported)?

Do the UniFi devices understand multicast, and if so, have you got IGMP snooping turned on on them?

IGMP is currently turned off, would turning this on help?

Would this make much difference anyway as the tv boxes are connected to internet through cable?

@GraemeCor

Yes.

The router see the multicast, and thinks it its bounden duty to send it to every device connected to the router. You need IGMP snooping on to counter this. The UniFis should support this, but you are still on your own as far as EETV support is concerned because they are third party equipment.

Let me see if I can call spirits from the vasty deep who have forgotten more about this stuff than I have ever learnt - @naylor2006 yoohoo!

Lol.

This notification for this @ went into my spam and I forgot I even had an account over here.

Scanning through the post it sounds exactly like a flooding issue however we can never be sure on equipment we cannot manage. I did a post for @Midnight_Voice recently and testing what traffic was present when an EETV box was on or off and indeed there is barely anything going on at all when its in standby, correlating with no issue. When switched on however Megabit of data are passed.

One thing that doesnt add up however is the old and new box, the old box not causing this issue but the new one does....is the new one in internet mode only and the old one was not?

In any case, Midnight has probably already given you the correct info, if you have a Unifi controller and Unifi gear certainly try turning on IGMP snooping. What Unifi equipment do you have, just APs?

EE900 | Nokia ONT | Ubiquiti ER-X | EETV Box Pro (IP Mode) | Unifi CK2 | 6x Unifi U6+ | 4x Unifi SAK Ultra

Hi @Peter_W , yes, tested with one TV box only.

Hi @IanH9 I've dropped you a direct message to get some more info.

thanks

Good Morning

I found your email address on a EE community forum regarding issues with EE internet and issues with the EE tv box. I have EE full fibre package 150 along with full works tv with a main box and mini box. I have noticed a lot of pixelation issues when watching through the tv box and signal drop off it seems, which is causing my viewing experience to be rather awful.

I have checked my speeds via the tv box app for Netflix and I'm pulling 130-140mb, I have the same speeds via the mini box in the other room. The router is not far away from either tvs, however I find that when I run the same speed test through the smart tv Netflix app I get a massive drop off, my speeds are showing 30-40mb. This is almost 100mb drop.

So I don't know whether I'm getting this drop off throughout the whole property for my devices or whether it's just my tvs that are unable to pull the speeds that the tv boxes are pulling, which is giving me pixelated pictures and sound out of sync issues. I have brand new tvs so I'm guessing the newest technology is installed inside them. I had an EE engineer come round and changed my settings from WiFi 6 to WiFi 5 no change. I have attached some pictures to show you the speeds and the pixelation issues. Everything is connected wirelessly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated IMG_2239.jpeg

I notice the pixelation issue is happening when watching sports and movies and it seems to be even worse when watching in 4k
