Text scam: Payment/Direct Debit failure message

Sorcha
Former EE Community Manager

There are several versions of scam text messages circulating at the moment. We wanted to let you see examples of what these may look like so that you can keep your details safe.

The messages advise that either a payment has failed, a direct debit has failed or that your profile needs to be updated to prevent payment failure. Remember to never log into your account via a link in a message, always log into your account directly.

These messages are fake and have not come from EE, here are some examples of what they can look like.

If you've received one of these messages, or something similar, don't worry. Receiving a suspicious text, email or voice call won't harm you – harm can only come if you interact with it

Just remember these important tips:

  • Don’t click on links unless you’re 100% sure they are genuine

  • Take a moment to stop and think and trust your instincts. If it looks too good to be true or looks suspicious, it probably is

  • Don’t give any of your personal details or give anyone access to your computer – if you think you might have provided your bank account details, contact your bank immediately

For more information on how to stay safe online and report these message take a look at our Spam and phishing article.

I received the following text today from this number: +44 7470 655847

-EE- There has been a issue processing a bill payment on your account, to avoid extra charges please visit us at <link removed>

I believe this to be a scam. Please can you check if this is the case?

I had an email, dumb thing is, that actually give the correct contact numbers at the end of the email.  I guess it's too lul you into a sense of security having the correct phone numbers on.

@Kimmy58 : Yes, It's a scam! There are many of these going the rounds. EE would never send you a msg asking you to click on a link in order to update your a/c.

Report it to your network provider by forwarding the text to 7726 (S.P.A.M. on your keypad).

If you think I helped please feel free to hit the "Thumbs Up" button below.

Only been with EE a couple weeks and had this message yesterday:

"your reoccurring payment has failed. please update your billing details at: eeupdated.com/mybilling"

Other than friends and family NO ONE, not even my employer, knows my new number yet. No one.

How am I getting this at all let alone so soon? Have I been placed on a public directory or something?
