I took my sim card out my old phone into a new handset. It just says emergency calls. I have turned it off. Tried airplane mode on and off. Gone into settings. Help

So I’ve recently upgraded plans on EE. I received a new sim yesterday with a new number. BUT I would like to keep my old number? How do I transfer my old EE number? There are only instructions for transferring from a different provider?
