You can access your voicemail remotely by calling voicemail from any other phone, pressing * from the main menu, and entering your mobile number & PIN.
If you are abroad and calling from your own phone, you may sometimes need to enter the PIN.
If a PIN is being requested and you don't have one set, then you are in a catch-22 situation.
