Disappearing Signal

I have had the Oppo Find X2 Pro from EE for the past three years and I have had trouble with it for the past six weeks or so.

At the end of August I had a message from EE to say they were doing work in the area and at the same time my signal dropped for a period of time.  After a few days and getting a message to say it was resolved and after checking to see if there were still issues in the area I could still see I had my problem.

I decided to do a factory reset of the phone to see if that helps and it didn't, whilst setting it back up I could see the problem still existed so I called up and EE sent out a replacement SIM.

The new SIM card arrived and it worked straight away, I had a 5G signal and I thought it was resolved but later on that day the problem appeared again.

The signal would go from 5G to 4G then disappear completely and sometimes the phone signal would as well or remain on four bars.  If I look at my phone icons at the same time I can see it going from Blue (on) to grey (off), on and off like traffic lights.

I called up and again and various people I spoke to said there was work still getting done in the area and it was suggested I waited until this had been completed.

I used my sons 5G O2 SIM in my phone for that night and did not notice any of these issues so I got back in touch with EE.

One thing I have noticed is that I get the menu where I can select between 5G, 4G and 3G if I use the EE SIM but get it if I use the O2 SIM (I have read on here that phone companies are forcing us to use 5G? is that true)

Before contacting them I tried the 5G EE SIM in a 4G phone and it works perfectly fine (in fact there never has been an issue) and the menu where you can select 5G, 4G and 3G appears but because it is only a 4G phone I can only select 4G!

To cut a long story short I have been told now that the phone is probably to blame, even though a EE PAYG 4G and a 02 5G SIM works fine in it and the EE 5G SIM works in a 4G phone.

I have previously used this 5G EE SIM around my town and never had an issue with it but it seems to have stopped working all the time after they have done work in the area.

Have you compared your service with another EE user?

I'm not completely clear what your issue is, but I'm not sure what testing another operator's SIM does here. You've demonstrated that the SIM has control over your phone's menus, which is a well known practice - EE do remove some user control of which radio technology is selected.

No I don't know anyone else on that network unfortunately.

I tested it with the O2 SIM (first of all) to eliminate it being a phone issue.

I had no idea that the SIM or provider could restrict the menus in the phones (although I did suspect it), even the operators I spoke to did not let on about this (or maybe didn't know).

I hope you've tested O2 out in all your areas... they're regularly last in all the data surveys and "which networks are best" tests....

Yeah seems to be good here and any signal is better than one that appears and disappearing constantly lol

I'd never use Vodafone again 😁

Good indicated coverage does not automatically equate to good data speeds. There is a popular misconception around "only one bar" being a bad thing, and "full bars" meaning good service.

For various reasons, it really is not that simple. I wouldn't say "any signal is better", but reliable service is what most users want - and something which online coverage maps will rarely be a good judge of.

Well anything is better than the no service I'm getting from EE 😂

Can't even make phone calls at times!

Everything was fine until they had to do routine work in the area 🙄
