Should my mobile sim work in a 4g router?

Hi, should I be able to take the sim out of my phone and use it in a 4g router or does it have to to be specificity a data sim to to work in a 4g router? I ask because I am trying to do some testing of speeds but can’t seem to get it to work. Thanks

Rubbish mini 4g mobile router

Since I got this it initially worked just okay despite the EE people saying it can handle up to 10 WiFi units. But now on a daily basis I cannot stream a thing as it just rubbish constantly having to reset it and supposedly up to 20mbps absolute joke...
