5Gee 2021 Home Router - Fan Noise

I've had the 2021 5Gee Home Router running for a couple fo months without issue - easily integrated into my pre-existing mesh setup, and now getting much better speeds up and down.

However, in the last couple of days the fan in the unit has become INCREDIBLY NOISY where once it was whisper-quiet. Restarting doesn't change anything, or adjusting its position on the shelf.

Anyone else had / having these issues? It's impossible to work with the noise it's creating.

Thanks in advance

Tom

I suggest you listen to your customers and perhaps EE try one of these devices themselves since they are selling them. Utter rubbish.

Actually very easy. Underneath the EE badge it's a Zyxel NR5103E. Basically you can remove the rubber feet at the bottom to reveal screws, unscrew and the bottom comes off.

Just for the record, same problem.
BT Whole Home plugged into Ethernet, nothing else.

I will disconnect the fan if it continues

Same issue happened to me, I'm on my 2nd device now and it seems to be a persistant problem with all of them yet EE refuse to acknowledge it! Long term, without the fan working the device eventually will struggle to stay online as it can overheat quite easily.
The only way I was able to get a replacement the first time was to cancel and re sign up but my 2nd device has now started having fan issues after only 2-3 months...

TL:DR;

Lube up the fan.

I've experienced the same issue after about 6 months. At first, using compressed air through the bottom vents fixed the issue for a short while, but the noise returned bigger, badder and more persistent.

I decided to take the bottom off (screws under the rubber pads, a very common tech thing) and take a look inside. After a proper clean with the fan on and off, the noise persisted. It was on its last chance before I disconnected the fan entirely and considered a replacement fan.

  • If you remove the fan, you can pry the blades off of the motor/frame assembly. It's literally just pressed in and clips in at the center rotation point. Once the blades are off, you can clean the motor and fan with an earbud and some solution, then apply some oil to the center part where the fan clips into the motor and rotates. Reassemble the fan and reinstall. Problem solved.

If you want a reason why the problem happens, I'd say that Zyxel cheaped out when choosing a fan. What is it about the fan that's cheap? I'd say that there's either too much of a gap between the blades and the motor/housing components, allowing dust to get into the pin/socket joint and making a less-than-smooth rotation. Or the oil used in manufacturing the fan has dried out (or similar, maybe too thin) and is no longer sufficiently lubricating the fan.

Either way, it's absolutely abysmal that EE don't have an adequate replacement/repair service for such a fix. They should be ashamed for how this is being dealt with and the treatment paying customers are receiving.

Obviously they've struck a deal with Zyxel, and are stuck with thousands/millions of units. But someone isn't taking responsibility, and it shouldn't be up to the customer to figure out how to fix their problem, just because it's cheaper to push forward and leave it for customer services to pass the buck until they come out with a new device, instead of publicly admitting a fault and affecting their bottom line.

May all their ice-cream taste like earwax, a hex upon thEE!!

Same problem with mine. Have EE  or now BT been anyhelp?

Same with me. In other words we can get lost.

Sorry you’re having the same issues as I had.

To be fair, I’ve NOT had the issues for over a year now. There are TWO commons causes - see if either match your experience.

1. in my case, I was trying to power something off the built-in USB socket - which draws extra power - and causes the fan to labour. When I removed the USB device it was much happier.

2. others have noticed by dissembling the unit that the fan inside is cheaply made / poorly lubricated. There’s a couple of. Posts which describe how you can re-lubricate the fan if you’re practically minded. This probably voids your warranty though.

it’s clear that EE still can’t support these devices adequately and treat them like portable smartphones. Until they change this attitude they can never be a serious contender for reliable home broadband.

Good luck with your setup - hope it gets fixed.

I'm gonna unsubscribe now.

I have been running the device for 2 years without the fan plugged in. I lose connection even though all the lights are on about once evey couple of days, I don't know if that is related.
