5Gee 2021 Home Router - Fan Noise

I've had the 2021 5Gee Home Router running for a couple fo months without issue - easily integrated into my pre-existing mesh setup, and now getting much better speeds up and down.

However, in the last couple of days the fan in the unit has become INCREDIBLY NOISY where once it was whisper-quiet. Restarting doesn't change anything, or adjusting its position on the shelf.

Anyone else had / having these issues? It's impossible to work with the noise it's creating.

Thanks in advance

Tom

For all of you experiencing this noise issue with the fan. I've now run the unit every day all day for more than 6 months with the fan in the base completely unplugged. To date, I've had no internet or connectivity issues that I wasn't experiencing before I disconnected the fan.

That's good to know. Thank you for the update. It's driving me round the bend. I can't believe EE release units like this. They say to send it off for repair! They must know about this issue with these rubbish unit fans. I was either going to (in this order);

1. Re-seat the fan by loosening or tightening the screws holding it in.

2. Source another better quality fan of same size and spec.

3. Disconnect it.

Remove the rubber feet on the bottom to reveal screws. Undo those screws and the bottom comes off to reveal the fan.

Sorry to hear of your issues lethe1977 and scwilson

As i've since reported elsewhere in this thread, i've actually not had a repeat of this noisy fan behaviour for many months now - though I sit the unit on a foam base and never run anything off the USB port to be safe.

It's interesting that the fan may not be required for normal operation, but scwillson - i;d be interested to know if you find a good quality fan to replace your noisy one - i'm now out of contract and may consider some lite modding myself.

It's a shame to hear EE's still treating this like a mobile phone and has no improved replacement / loan unit policy to offer customer who rely upon their service - it's a missed opportunity.

Good luck to you both meantime!

I tried #1 - didn't work. #3 definitely worked for me. And really easy to
do.

I tried re-seating the fan also, no use, after 30 mins it kicked in and started grinding again.

So at the moment I have it unplugged .

The fan in mine is a "CROWN" model AGE04010F 12U

DC12V 0.14A

G22534H4

Trying to find a similar replacement, it appears to be a 40mm x 40mm x 10mm small micro cooling fan. Problem is trying to find a fan with the right connector on the end. It's not a 3 or 4 pin fan connector I am used to seeing. There are 4 wires so maybe a micro connector of some kind.

Been running fine for over a week now without the fan plugged in.

Only issue I have is every now and then the WiFi drops out and there is no internet connection. I have to reboot.

What I am having to do is put the router on a timer and rebooting in the early hours of the morning.

EE - this hardware is rubbish! Little to no support for your customers. Sold as home broadband yet told it needs to be sent off. Pathetic!

That's interesting. On mine the WiFi never drops but I do lose internet
connection occasionally. I am not sure this is related to the fan though
because I got it before....o can't tell if it's more frequent now.

Hi. Yes got the same issue. Started last week. Had the router about 4 months. Really loud fan noise. Reset or turn off stops it for a few minutes then starts again 🙄
