@Andypanz  Yes. You need to call customer support if your account doesn’t let you upgrade to a new sim only tariff.

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.

Hi Chris,

just checking as when i called them on 150 thy told me i would have to pay off the remainder of the device plan is this correct?

@Andypanz  No not at all.  Otherwise you could change network providers and keep paying for the device for the last 12 months.  It’s a 24 month airtime contract and you cannot be forced to stick to that for another 12 months as that would mean it’s a 36 month airtime contract which it’s not.

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.

Fairly sure this is correct advice for the scenario of you wanting to port-out or disconnect once the airtime plan has expired.

This said, I'd be quite surprised if a SIM-only was ~half the cost of the airtime element of a FlexPay, for the same allowances. A few £ here or there I'd expect, possibly a bit more with promotions - but I'd be interested to see specific examples.

The airtime element of FlexPay is a quasi-SIM-only already, after all.

Hi @Andypanz,

Welcome to the EE Community

Just wanted to confirm the advice you have been given by @Chris_B is correct, I am sorry you were told differently. In the situation where your airtime contract is over but you still have 12 months to pay on the device agreement you can do any of the following-

  • Keep your current airtime plan on a 30-day rolling contract and continue paying for their Flex Pay agreement or pay it off early
  • Move to a SIM only deal and continue paying for their Flex Pay agreement or pay it off early
  • Upgrade to a new device and plan by paying off the remaining Flex Pay balance
  • Leave EE by either paying off the Flex Pay balance or continuing with the Flex Pay agreement despite cancelling their EE contract

So you can change your airtime plan to a SIM only plan without needing to pay off the remainder of your device agreement. It is only if you are upgrading to a new phone that you need to pay off any remaining Flex Pay balance immediately.
