general EE dns settings for non ee routers

Hi I have been on EE for decades, and all that time used a Vigor 2710 router, which recently died. I used this as the standard supplied router does not give me the functionality I need and have used for many years.

As I am due to get fibre soon I decided to go for a top of the range replacement, so I bought a Vigor 2866ax, which has the technical features and can run ADSL, VDSL and GFast.

I have copied the settings from my temporary EE Brightbox which I used as a stop gap until my new 2866 arrived to my new router. I used the account name and pw to connect and ADSL appears to connect , but I am getting a DNS error - cant connect.

EE support could not help - they simply would not discuss the issue as it involved a 3rd party router, which is poor as there must be 1000's of users with non EE routers, and someone must know the answer to this.

Does anyone know settings for EE DNS that will work ?

I have tried Gateway, 1Y and 2Y DNS IPs copied from Brightbox, (172.16.19.158, 87.237.17.199, 87.237.17.187) also changed gateway to new router IP (NOT 192.168.1.1) and left blank but all same - cannot connect. Any help greatly appreciated - NO info found on any EE site about this issue.

@chrisdodd99   you can use any dns you choose, but it won't be them that is stopping you connecting.

Have you changed the VC Mux setting?

Have you tried changing the username to bthomehub@btbroadband.com ?  Either no password or BT if the router needs it.

@Mustrum yes vcmux done.

Whats the logic in changing username ?

If there's a problem with something in the router then wont it be the same for any user account, or are you trying to eliminate something?

I've tried to post on draytek forum but it wont let me, so trying to chase that up.

All this is very odd , I've used draytek without a problem for decades, now its a real pain. I think its got to be something simple as its such a basic problem. 2866ax full manual is 1025 pages, so its not exactly an easy read, and as usual with manuals , it defines options for each setting , but not the reasons why , and not what conflicts with what.

@chrisdodd99   just trying to eliminate stuff is all. The username or password being wrong is often a cause of problems.

Are you using the latest 4.4.3 BT firmware?

@Mustrum - I will double check user/pw but if wrong adsl line connection would fail? I will also check f/w but first glance last time said it was "latest".

I need to disconnect and reconnect to new router to do this - will do it when wife out at gym 530-630 to avoid a "domestic" and then reply in detail.

I emailed draytek uk support and they have acknowledged receipt - one forward , how many back to come ? C

@chrisdodd99   I can only think it must be something simple, so good luck and let us know how it goes.

Let's see your WAN > Internet Access page blanking out your BB Username & pwd as it is now & also the WAN > General Setup page.

If this "DNS error - cant connect" error only occurs in certain situations, what are you doing to trigger it?

@XRaySpeX Hello again

I get the error as soon as i fire up Chrome - default is it displays 3 pages, and I get 3 errors cant connect . if i do a search on anything get another exactly the same. Tried another browser and flushed dns - no change

I managed to log a call with draytek support and they have confirmed receipt - maybe they help as well

Thanks

Chris

Then how is it that your wife is usefully able to use it so that you cannot take it down w/out disturbing her?

I think you also need to blank out the MAC addy on the WAN > Internet Access page to get it accepted for display.

Please show an image of this DNS error msg in context.

Is it that you get the error msg but you wife doesn't?  If so, please run the command ipconfig /all from your PC, obscuring any of your names.

Might be worth flushing the dns on the machine that you are getting the failures on.

start a command line prompt/window (type cmd in the search bar) then type

ipconfig  /flushdns

you should see :

'Windows IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.'

returned as a result.

If still failing :  if the machine autoconnects to wifi. Do a disconnect and manual reconnect to the wifi. If using a VPN turn it off and check the connection. Maybe tell the device to forget the wifi connection then search for it and re-enter the connection details for the SID/WIFI network you want to connect to.
I myself have seen all of these cause issues with the connection, causing it to fail. When another device is working correctly.
