Upgrade from Legacy FTTC to New EE Full Fibre

I recently upgraded my legacy EE Fibre Plus plan (FTTC 80 Meg) to New EE Full Fibre 150 (FTTP 150 Meg), but could just as well have been any Full Fibre up to at least 1 Gig. It all went smoothly as to be hoped & expected.

In early Dec. 2024 I ordered the upgrade & EE booked an Openreach (OR) engineer to install it on 30th.Dec. He promptly arrived then in an OR van also marked with C.J.Quinn, so I don't know whether he was really OR but he did do a neat efficient job.

He laid my new fibre cable overhead from the telephone pole in parallel to my existing separate landline about a foot apart to my roof area, than vertically down to near ground level to a small grey external box & then horizontally to a entry point he drilled close to where my existing landline enters. On the inside he fitted a 1 Gig ONT resulting in this setup:

Once I hooked up the SH+ (SH32B) sent me beforehand I speed tested it at ThinkBroadBand to get sync speeds of 150/30 Meg as it has been since. I confirmed with the engineer that all was satisfactory & he left.

It took about 2 weeks before my legacy FTTC line was cut off. So for a time I was running 2 BBs, FTTC & FTTP, thro' 2 different routers.

I am longer using the SH+ but am using my original BrightBox 2 because I know it can reach all the places I want it to reach, all my devices recognise it without change & it is functionally stronger than the SH+. The only thing missing is IPv6 but I can live without that..

@MBEE : I did see your posts about the cabling but, sorry,  I've no idea what can be done about them. As they are both OR property all you can do is take it up with EE CS.

@MBEE That's for another OR time and discussion, a few engineers have jumped the gun in installation side when doing the Fibre disconnecting the old copper and then Fibre issues put the system offline, no BB and no way back, apart from having the box there with the cable just forget about at present. If need and would be better for OR to do they could remove pull the cable out, or cut it back to the ground line out off sight. All about the cost's involved.

There's an interesting side effect of my upgrade to FTTP. Many users on here appear to be having difficulty adding their New EE BB to their existing (often mobile) MyEE a/c's. I found that mine was already added w/out me having to anything, alongside my previous legacy FTTC BB a/c (by now all the old bills have gone).

I dunno whether this was cuz I did the upgrade thro' the trials team.

Thanks both, it does seem from your replies that I've been reasonably lucky then, in that at least my fttp is up and running and the new fttp BB plan is showing against my account alongside the old fttc one (which is indeed now cleared of all the old bills).

@XRaySpeX , It was more the 'temperamental' ethernet cord from the ONT I was concerned about and was wondering if maybe yours behaved the same? Guess I may have a dodgy ONT but again, will take it up with EE CS once I've sorted my router shelf.

@JimM11 , I def don't want the cable cut back to ground line as I'm v.happy with the position of the ONT and router now; I'm more concerned that I don't want to be held responsible for accidental damage down the line which simply wouldn't have happened if it turns out that the fibre cable could and should've been routed a little more carefully (ie. not sticking straight out of the door frame as per my photo but rather put through another hole in the wall and allowed to lie flat against the top of the skirting board, as was done with the rest of the cable run).

...I also received this sms recently; I don't think they're liking us 'legacy router folk' much, they can't see us properly! 😅

@MBEE Any confusion i was talking about the removal off your old Outside box off the wall, nothing else.

OR are pretty flexible where the ONT will go, particularly on the same side of the house as the telephone pole, & will fit in with your requirements as to its positioning as long as there's a spare power socket nearby.

From where they fit the external junction box they can run any length of cable to the point on the outside wall opposite to where the ONT is to be positioned, e.g.:20250211_161123.jpg

@MBEE Just maybe that EE are trying to match the serial number off the router that they may have sent you, and what are you currently using?

Sorry, @MBEE , I don't remember what you said about a  'temperamental' ethernet cord from the ONT. Which post was that? I've had no trouble with mine. I already had it ready & waiting from a previous router box before the eng. arrived.
