Please Help! EE Router FTTP Not Providing Speed To Mesh WiFi

Hello everyone,

I am a newbie here and I really hope someone can help.

Today after many years of waiting we finally got FTTP from EE after switching from FTTC with BT previously. On my old setup, I had the BT Smart Hub 2 as the modem and had my TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro plugged into an ethernet port and it provided the same speed as I got through the BT router through the TP-Link Mesh. Today however we had the EE router installed and I thought it would be a simple job of switching the ethernet wires over from the old BT Hub to the New EE Hub but upon doing this I seem to have lost a ton of the speed.

If I connect my PC to the new EE Hub (WiFi or Wired) I am getting close to 900mbps download and over 100mbps upload but if I connect my computer to the TP-Link Deco system which is plugged into the EE router via ethernet I am getting less than 50mbps download and about 15mbps upload. I have some other brands of routers (Netgear and TP-Link) which I have used in the past. If I plug them into the EE Hub I get the same slow speeds. I thought maybe the EE Hub was faulty so I thought I would try the old BT Hub and see if that would even connect which it connected fine with high speeds but again the same issue of less than 50mbps to the connected mesh I use r any of the other routers I try.

I have tried connecting the WAN cable directly from the ONT to the Deco but it doesn't connect so this won't work. I've tried numerous different ethernet cables including CAT8 but none work. If I turn the EE Hub off and the Deco off then both back on for a very short time there is good speed but it then drops down to less than 50 again. I have no idea what to do but it just doesn't work like it did before and I'm not aware of a reason why.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

PS. I wish to use the Deco mesh because it works better in my home and has extra security features for my family which is why I need to be able to get this working somehow. The EE mesh doesn't seem very good and I had lots of trouble connecting one WiFi Plus to the EE Hub.

@ChrisUK24 Then connect Wan of Tp-link to Lan of EE Router, go into the tp-link software and set up as AP mode, that should get you full speed on the deco.

When connecting the Mesh direct to ONT did you set the Deco's WAN setting for the BB PPPoE Username/pwd as that required by EE which is the same as BT's: bthomehub@btbroadband.com /BT or blank?

@ChrisUK24 Do you have any requirement for a landline with DV connected to the EE Router? If not then you should be able to do away with the router completely and just use you deco system connected direct to the ONT via the ethernet cable....

Hi XRaySpeX,

I didn't look into this part and the Deco app can be a nightmare at times finding things. I do really need to use the EE Hub for my home phone line though and my Hybrid Connect.

Hi JimM11,

I do need the home phone line sadly also the Hybrid Connect.

@ChrisUK24   which model Deco do you have?

Did you reboot it before connecting it to the EE router?

@ChrisUK24 And switch the Hybrid off just now to ensure it is not causing any issues until your deco is working as per how you need it. Your EE Router needs to update its FW if you jus t put it on today. if you browse to 192.168.1.254 will get you to the EE Router hub manager page. r1.34.1-R-1055417-PROD-83002 is the latest version of EE FW on the router.

Hi Mustrum,

I have the TP-Link Deco XE75Pro which is my main mesh network. I do also have some other routers which I've also tested to try and rule out it being the TP-Link Deco at fault. I have a TP-Link Archer Air R5 with the same issue and I have also tested a Netgear RS300 WiFi 7 router also an old Netgear R6120. I have some Netgear Orbi somewhere which I am thinking of also testing but all of these devices I connect via ethernet cable seem to all have a slow speed.

I've rebooted the EE Hub and Deco numerous times now and only when turning it off and on there is a brief moment where the speed is okay then drops again. The speed out of the EE Hub is perfect.

Hi JimM11,

I think I could kiss you 😍 this seems to have fixed the issue LOL 🤣 I have been trying to fix this since about 14:00 today and it has driven me bonkers but (touch wood) this seems to have fixed it thank god and thank you sooooooooooooooo much!!!
