Not sure if possible. Sky Router

Thought I would ask a question, not sure if possible.

So I have signed up with EE for the 1.6gbps and Smart Hub Pro Wifi 7.

Initially due to install this week, but got a new date of 27th June. Wifi is weak, so the fact Im getting a Smart Wifi Pro device is fantastic and was hoping there was a way I can connect the Smart Hub Pro to the Sky FTTP or Sky Router and utilise the Wifi 7 and Smart Wifi Pro while I wait for the Engineer to come out and change my ONT?

I did say how to do it above.  I’m not familiar with the hub you are talking about, so I can’t give specific instructions, but the technique is essentially generic and how you do it with any third-party router.  Basically, you give it static address in your network, turn everything off except the Wi-Fi and then connect them LAN port to LAN port.  (You turn everything else off as you can’t have two actual routers and DHCPs in a network – they fight).

It is also usually possible to export a backup configuration file before you do this, then just reimport it when you want to go back to how it was.

Perfect, so essentially the Sky Hub would be given an IP out of the range, and then let the EE Smart Hub Pro deal with the DHCP?

Other way round.  Best to let the one handling your internet connection do the DHCP and the one acting as a Wireless Access Point (WAP) is on a static IP with everything except the wireless turned off.

I believe Sky hubs use 192.168.0.1 as their IP. If so...

  • Power up the Smart Hub Pro, connect something to it, log into the GUI at 192.168.1.254 and navigate to Advanced > Network > Configuration
  • Change the IP address of the Pro to an IP address within the same subnet as  your Sky Hub (but preferably outside of its DHCP range). Don't know what the DHCP range of the Sky hubs is but let's say you use 192.168.0.100
  • Disable DHCP on the Pro
  • Save the changes and power the Pro off
  • Connect the Pro to the Sky hub using an Ethernet cable plugged into LAN ports at both ends
  • Power the Pro up, log into the Sky hub and disable the Wi-Fi
  • All being well you can now connect to the Pro Wi-Fi network and have Internet access
  • Note, to access the Pro settings, you will now need to use the 192.168.0.100 address, instead of 192.168.1.254
  • Also note, the Pro will obnoxiously flash its lights at you because it expects to be the device that's doing the Internet connectivity

To revert everything when the EE line is active then just factory reset the EE hub by inserting something into the pinhole at the rear of the device until the LED flashes green.

A fair bit of hassle really and you won't be able to use any of the EE app features etc. I'd personally wait.

Thank you, seems to be working a treat... now just roll on next week for the 1.6gbps speeds.

(but preferably outside of its DHCP range).

No 'preferably' about it.  It has to be outside the range or it will cause problems sooner or later.

Yeah the DHCP range for the Sky Hub was 192.168.0.1 > 192.168.0.253 - so Assigned the Hub Pro 192.168.0.254

@RobBark8 Don't think so you will find that the sky is on 192.168.0.2 to the 192.168.0.254 for the DHCP and you should have pushed the 192.168.0.2 up higher and then fixed your IP lower than that. But if you have it working then just leave it alone, you have not got long to go before the changeover anyway!

Quick update... 1.6gbps now install and everything reverted back to factory on the Hub... Only thing is, the speed test on the app is showing 858mbps when the speed guarantee is 1300mbps... just hoping its getting settled over a day or two.
