How to get a Wifi Extender and which one?

Hi everyone 👋. A bit of a confusing one so bare with me. I initially had FTTP through BT in which they sent me out their Smart Hub 2 because I was moving from normal BT Broadband. When the contract got renewed, as part of the BT/EE merger, the package remained exactly the same but I am now through EE. So I currently am running our FTTP internet through BT's Smarthub 2 but paying for the service through EE.

After moving some bits around in the house, we have discovered that we have a really weak WIFI spot in one of the rooms so I was looking to get a WIFI extender. The problem is I'm confused as to where I need to get one from. From what I've seen, if you have weak WIFI signal, BT will send out a WIFI extending disc free of charge. The problem is, as far as my BT account goes, I have no active products through them so I cannot see them sending out a disc when as far as they are concerned, I have no internet package through them.

I could contact EE, but I don't have their internet hub so I'm guessing their WIFI extender won't work with the BT Smarthub? In order to extend the WIFI, do I need to contact EE to get a new Smart Hub Pro and a WIFI Extender?

To sum up in case this post is confusing...

- Had normal broadband through a copper line through BT.

- Upgraded to FTTP internet through BT and got sent a Smarthub 2.

- Renewed the contract after the above contract run its course but was moved from BT to EE.

- Found a weak WIFI area in the house and want to correct it by getting a WIFI extender.

- I'm guessing I won't get one through BT due to not being on their books any more and I'm guessing even if I got sent one from EE, it wouldn't talk to the BT Smarthub 2?

Hopefully that clears up any confusion and thank you to anyone that can help 😁.

@Scott_4x4 BT Complete wi-fi (the black disk shaped ones) more than likely the best way to go used second hand, and from that other special site where you part money and get it sent! Or but make sure it is new if that is what you are looking for!

BT COMPLETE WI-FI DISC, ADD ON DISC, dual band : Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Hi Jim and thanks for your post. I have seen that I can buy the discs and I feel like that is the way I'll end up heading. But call me a cheapskate if you want 😄, but if BT are going to send them out for free, I much prefer that option over shelling out 50 or 60 quid 😁. I'm not sure if EE does the whole "we will send out one WIFI Extender free of charge" thing or not? 😊

As you are still using the BT SH2 you would would need either :

  1. the black BT Complete WiFi Disc . This only works with BT SH2 router & is only available from BT, like BT Shop for £100 each, or
  2. the white "High St." BT Whole Home Disc. This is supposed to work with any router & used to be available from BT High St. stores.

Were you to use an EE router it would be a completely diff kettle of fish.

@Scott_4x4 Free is if you are paying the £7/month addon price already, so have a look on your current bill's they will tell you!

Thanks for that XRaySpeX. The problem I have is that BT (I'm not sure about EE) do a whole "if you have weak WIFI, we will send you out a WIFI extender disc free of charge". Before I go splashing out 50, 60 or 100 quid, I'm trying to work out if I qualify for a freebie and spend the money elsewhere 😁. Yes I have been called "tighter than a ducks backside" in the past 😂.

EE does when you have an EE router & take out or have included EE Smart WiFi and Smart WiFi Plus

You could just try to call BT explaining your situation that you were moved from BT to EE but are still using BT kit & see if they will send you a Complete WiFi Disc for free or a nominal amount.

@Scott_4x4 If you do manage to squeeze it out keep quite about it!

Hah, thanks everyone for the messages 👍. I think the general consensus seems to be chance my arm with BT and keep schtum or just cough up the 50 to 100 quid for a used/new BT WIFI disc 😁.
