Is there an update to this 2.5 months later?

The update to this is .... "Buy your own hardware"

But, buying your own hardware still won't let you log into your accounts, in a joined up way, and access billing information via the website. The whole system is currently broken. I don't know why EE doesn't just used BT's hardware and apps, which work. I get that the BT/EE group wants differentiation in branding -- EE for consumers and BT for businesses -- but it could achieve that more straightforwardly by streamlining its hardware offer to use the same hardware for both services because BT has consistently offered good hardware and apps, whilst EE has never been very good at that part of the system.

First up, I haven't read the whole thread, so sorry if this has already been suggested. Get yourself a second hand bottom of the range Synology NAS. It should not cost you more than a few tenners, but even the most basic supports DDNS through Synology's own service ('quick connect', no service fees). Couple that with built in VPN and you can effectively connect to any service on your home network as if you were plugged in at home (ie referencing local IP addresses). It doesn't interfere in any way with your EE SmartHub and also means you dont need to open any public ports, better from a security point of view.

Of course another side effect is that you can also pop in an SSD as local network file store, which is also accessible directly via the Synology apps anywhere (both android and IOS). There are a load of apps you can install in the Synology itself, meaning some of the services you are running on your PC may actually work from the NAS instead.

PS - I dont work for Synology, but I do like their kit. I am sure you can do the same with Qnap etc, I am just not familiar with those.

Hi all.
Just setup my EE router having switched from BT and was rather annoyed when I couldn't find where to setup my DDNS (I use noip.com). Got even more annoyed when started reading this thread and that EE have removed what was a standard feature with my old BT hub.

Thanks for this post NHUK, I didn't realise this! I have a synology NAS and have just setup DDNS with my noip service - there's a guide here:
https://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/enable-ddns-within-synology-device

What with storage, PLEX server and now DDNS I'm pleased I bought the NAS. For those without one I hope EE keep to their word and reinstate the DDNS within the router.
Cheers.

The white hub had the dynamic dns setting, but the newer black hub doesn't.
What you need to do is install an DDNS update program on the computer you're connecting in to, that then periodically contacts the no-ip server to update the ip address if it changes.

There are various generic ddns update apps available, or use this page to download and install no-ip's own one.

Yes, thats certainly an option to leave a P.C on 24/7 consuming power just to mitigate a  short-sighted feature removal from EEs 'Smart' Hub.

I solved my DDNS problem my making a small  USB powered ESP8266 Arduino board which runs a DDNS update service and is plugged this into the back of the hub, however I  recognise this is beyond many EE users as a fix.  The removal of the 'Smart' Hubs USB socket & network storage function was patched over by adding an old BT hub 4 in the network and using  its USB socket with a large flash drive...it works fine,  but another power consuming 'bodge '!

It has been a painful shambles - some  EE representatives here reassured us DDwas NS comming back, yet others in tech support were adamant it was being removed permanently from several hub models to simplify things and reduce support & security risk issues. After months passing, it seems the latter is correct.   There is no sign of this hub becoming Smart...and I  gave up dealing with it.  We are moving to WightFibre at the end of this contract!

Is there any news on this being added as a feature. I have just moved across from BT and need this

@lindsay245ms There is still no change or update at this present time to DDNS or DNS changes, FW is still fixed and tied down!

It was there yesterday, but after an update 1/2 hr ago it has gone again. EE should employ the BT programmers to sort out this hub, the EE guys obviously have no clue.
