Broadband speed - time lag/training period before it comes up to speed?

I have just renewed and upgraded my BT account and been switched to EE. The new account and hub was activated on Wednesday (13th May).

I have the Full Fibre core 900 - with a 'guaranteed' speed of 700Mbs - but , on my laptop using wifi and a web browser speed test (and also from my Linux command line) I'm getting 300...400..and once 500Mbs.  I can't use the EE mobile app speed test (although an independent speed test on my phone is showing ever slower speeds of circa 200Mbs) as I can't log in via the app as i get an error (the error has been reported to EE and, from Googling, appears to be a common EE mobile app bug).

When should I start seeing the 'guaranteed' speeds? When on BT, I was contracted to 70+Mbs - and the speed was consistently around that value - never an issue.

All ISPs can only supply, quote & guarantee BB connection speeds to the router. Beyond that, particularly over WiFi, is up to you.

You need to run the speed test in the EE app. That will not only measure the raw BB connection speeds you are getting at the router as well as speeds to the device from which you are testing.

Where is the EE app?

@SteveTu2 Can you not do an Ethernet speed test connected direct to the EE Hub.... The EE app you will find in either the google play store or in apple for the IOS version depending on the mobile device you are using. If your wifi device is just not good enough then the speed reported will be what it is... My old wireless N laptop reports 300Mb/s but that is just as good as that device can do on wireless, Ethernet connected it does the full FF500 at 500/70mb/s.

@XRaySpeX , @JimM11

But as I've said - I can't use that EE app (I thought you may be talking about another, non mobile, app) - it doesn't allow me (and others with the same issue) to log in. See my post above.

I can connect directly to the hub, but (always a but) my speed test with the BT services via the old hub, gave 'good' speed results from my laptop where it is - is using the same config. I am trying to compare like for like - and I hope that the Hub isn't losing 300Mbs over wifi/LAN.

@SteveTu2 Have you contacted EE about the app not working so they can check your account side? What EE hub are you using for the connection on wifi, and is the device capable for wireless wifi speeds above the 900mb/s speeds.

Yep - I had the issue on Wednesday - called the support team and was told to retry Thursday - which I did, and contacted them as I still had the issue ( they logged the issue). There's a thread on here about similar mobile app issues - https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/EE-app-and-website/EE-App-issues/td-p/1615603/page/6

But you're right for the speed - a direct connect to the hub shows 900+Mbs wired and 750Mbs wireless (less than a metre from the hub) - the issue is then the drop off rate for me. I'm in a room across a hall from the hub - so two walls - and I get a drop off of circa 400Mbs on the wireless. I can't comment on the wired as I'm not Cat5 cabled and using non Gigabit powerline adapters.

@SteveTu2 Then there is nothing wrong with the install, powerline will NOT cut the mustard device wise, was ok at your 70mb/s speed on the copper but is NO good for high speed. Drop off is to be expected for a wireless wifi connection such as you have, if you also have a smart wireless unit you could try that also may help get you a little faster.

Forget about powerline, it's a load of tosh and will NEVER get up in speed, it is what it is, will take a full blown mesh system to get the FF900 speeds and that is also never going to be a guarantee that it will get there also.

The app works or not, even when it does then sometimes it just stops playing, think you posted also somewhere that you did not care about using it, that is the best way to treat it, and as long as you have no need to use it for schedules or parental controls, renaming devices etc then most everything else can be looked at with the web manager, https://192.168.1.254

There's no training time with full fibre - if the wired LAN speed isn't at the package speed straight away after installation then there's likely an issue with the configuration.

But if using WIFI things are different. WIFI is a convenient way to get a connection with tablets, phones, or devices without LAN sockets, but those sort of devices won't really need a 900Mb/s connection. Even with lots of simultaneous devices using up the 900Mb/s, each individually won't need that full speed.

But a PC might well make use of that speed - game downloads can be over 150GB in size. So the logical step when planning a broadband install of 900Mb/s - or in the future higher - is to put in some network cable - it's not that expensive to have installed compared with a mesh system - add some routers to give many devices a reliable full speed low latency connection.
