cheapest option for pay as you go?

My contract is coming to an end next month. I need to keep my number but will hardly be using it for the foreseeable future while overseas, so I am wondering what the cheapest option would be. I don't need data or minutes, I just need to be able to send and receive the occassional text message with the option to return to a normal contract in the future.

I remember many years ago I could just pay for the texts that I sent, without a monthly fee. I don't suppose that is still possible?

Thanks for any suggestions.

@Veronica72  That is possible you’ll need to call customer services to give notice to terminate your contract and you can request it to be changed to a PAYG.  Once it’s a PAYG sim you need to send the text of STOP PACK then only your credit on your account will pay for calls and texts.

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.

You'll need to send a chargeable text about every 5 1/2 months to keep it live.
