Re: Unlimited data sim 100GB cap in personal router

Hi @XRaySpeX , I was hoping to do something similar to @bsandos, but I fear it won't work. Can you clarify?

Your solution says to me "Any data gifted from the unlimited plan will reduce the [unlimited] allowance". This is contrary to the sentence in the T&Cs that you quoted (interpreted)  "Any data used on an unlimited plan will reduce the giftable allowance".

e.g. In order to gift 5GB you must limit your data usage on the unlimited plan to 95GB.

@ScrobbleDash : I dunno to what I said that you are referring or I don't understand your interpretation or both! It is certainly true that:

  1. "Any data gifted from the unlimited plan will reduce the [unlimited] FUP allowance (which is now 600GB)". Because gifted data like all data counts towards the FUP limit.
  2. "Any data used before gifting any data on an unlimited plan will reduce the giftable allowance". Because you may only gift from the 1st 100GB each month.
  3. Your example: In order to gift 5GB you must limit your data usage before gifting on the unlimited plan to 95GB (at most). Thereafter you may use a further 500GB (at least correspondingly) for your own use to comply with the FUP

Thanks for your patience @XRaySpeX  . I've hope I've understood it now.

On unlimited data, you typically can't gift data that becomes unexpectedly spare in the middle of the month. You'll have used up the 100GB gifting allowance. You must budget and distribute data at the start of every monthly cycle. "Spare" data must be predicted

On fixed-data plan, the word "spare" can mean "left-over", so the data gift can be an unexpected bonus.  On a 200GB plan, say you've used 130GB by the third week, but you're going off-web for a week - so you gift 50GB for the kids to use in your absence.

@ScrobbleDash : Sound about right in as far as it goes.

On an unlimited data plan, once you'll have used up the 100GB (120GB on a 5G plan) gifting allowance. either by actually gifting it or using it directly you can no longer gift data for the rest of the month until next plan month.

On fixed-data plan, you may gift data anytime during the month while you have any of your fixed data allowance remaining.

Unlimited is definitely inferior to 200GB in respect of teenager data emergencies. Such emergencies occur at any time of the month. Instant top-ups are required to avoid getting the blame for social exclusion.

Unlimited won't allow you to drip-feed data allowances either.

You can monitor your data usage on fixed-data plans, but it's very hard to do so on Unlimited plans. ( No Data Usage on Unlimited - 873950)

Thanks for your help ...  I'm off to get 2 x 200GB 😁
