my contract phone is asking me for thepuk to open it

This means you've entered your SIM PIN incorrectly 10 times. You can get your PUK code from myEE online under Account > Unlock codes
Be careful entering your PUK, you only get limited attempts before your SIM will be blocked permanently and need replacing.
