Normal Sim in mifi

I'm trying to find an answer without much luck, currently got a mifi with 100gb data, however looking at the latest offers i can get a sim only deal for nearly half the price of what im paying now. So my question is can a "normal" sim/contract be used in a mifi, naturally i won't be using any of the inclusive minutes etc, just the data part, or does it have to be a "data" sim

@Wemmapeel24 : Yes, & data SIMs also allow texts & most mobile routers can do texts (SMS), unlike calls.
