Normal Sim in mifi

I'm trying to find an answer without much luck, currently got a mifi with 100gb data, however looking at the latest offers i can get a sim only deal for nearly half the price of what im paying now. So my question is can a "normal" sim/contract be used in a mifi, naturally i won't be using any of the inclusive minutes etc, just the data part, or does it have to be a "data" sim

No, it doesn't have to be a data SIM. You can use a phone SIM in a mobile router & just not use the calls allowance. You can put any SIM in any device.

To phone EE CS: Dial Freephone +44 800 079 8586 - Option 1 for Mobile Phone & Mobile Broadband or Option 2 for Home Broadband & Home Phone

ISPs: 1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up > 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB > 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB > 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU > 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU > 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC > 2014: EE 20 Meg WBC > 2020: EE 40 Meg FTTC > 2022:EE 80 Meg FTTC SoGEA > 2025 EE 150 Meg FTTP

Thank you for the answer, although it does still leave me a bit confused, went into my local ee store today and asked the same question (not disbelieving or anything, just double checking) and they basically said no you can't, and if you did their fair use policy would apply and basically cut you off after 25GB, confused is an understatement

No wonder you're confused when you're told a load of balderdash 😞 !

  1. EE can't prevent you using a phone SIM in a mobile router. If they tried it would be a violation of Net-Neutrality rules.
  2. There is no FUP on limited data allowance SIMs. You can use up to the full allowance & then buy more if you run out. Even on unlimited data allowance phone SIMs the FUP is 1000GB.

I'm not sure what the advantage is of using a Mifi ..... why not just hot spot your phone?

@Joolzhutch : A mobile router gives you more control of your LAN & generally has more functionality than a hotspotted phone.

Thanks, forgive my ignorance but what is LAN?

Hi @Joolzhutch,

LAN is local area network. On some Mifis, you can change the IP settings used on the local network for example.

@XRaySpeX is correct though - net neutrality rules are strict. The general concept is that you've bought the access so can use in whatever terminal you want.

@Peter_C : There's much more to it than setting the IPs, Port Forwarding for instance.

The original sim that came with mifi box I got was one that would allow calls( as i later discovered from ee)

I was advised by EE store that I could just put my phone sim into data box as and when. Works fine for gaming too.
