No Internet Access when trying to set up a Devolo Magic 2 Powerline/Wifi adapter

Hi everyone,

Wondering if anyone can help me out here. So I currently have the EE Smart router connected to a Netgear Nighthawk XR500 router which are both downstairs. I want to connect my PC and Xbox (which are upstairs) to the network via ethernet using a powerline adapter so I've got myself the Devolo Magic 2 wifi starter kit.

I've got them all connected up, one adapter plugged into the Nighthawk router and the other plugged into my PC. The issue I'm running into is that my PC says that network does not have an Internet connection. I've tried swapping them around, using different cables, plugging into different ports on both the router, Smart Router and my PC but the issue persists.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @KarmaChang,

Welcome to the EE Community. 🙂

I'd recommend contacting the manufacturer of your powerline adapters for support.

Hi @KarmaChang ,

Have you consulted the quickstart guide and manual to pair the two Devolo devices so that they communicate and the relevant LED is lit to show they are communicating?

Are you able to access the management pages of your router to see what IP addresses have been assigned to them?

Have you tried accessing the IPs of the Devolo devices to access their management pages?

Have you downloaded the Devolo app to access the Devolo device directly to the router?

One good play is to connect both the devices directly to the router, ensure they are paired using the app or management page, and then move one to a distant location.

I recommend pairing the devices in the same room before separating them. Good luck!

When pairing 5 (!) TP-Link powerline adaptors, I used a gang-plug, so that everything was on the table top.

I suspect a contributor to your connectivity problems is the wiring of your house. Basically, these plugs work best when they are on the same circuit. The convention is houses have an upstairs fused ring circuit and a separately fused downstairs ring circuit.

Hence in the first instance I would recommend ensuring the devices themselves can see each other - achieved by using either a multiplug or having them both plugged into the same double socket faceplate. Then in the same room as your router, connect one plug to your router and the other into another socket in the same room to your laptop/computer, the plugs should pair and see the router. Only having achieved this would I then move one of the plugs upstairs and repeat the connectivity test, which may either fail or report a lower data rate (which may still be usable).

In the event of connectivity failure, your only real option is to run a Cat5e/Cat6 cable between your ground floor and upstairs.

Now you have LAN connectivity (for the Xbox and PC), I would worry about getting the WiFi connection configured for your tablets and phones. Remember with the WiFi to configure it to use the EE router as the DHCP server.
