I ordered an Apple watch online yesterday, and was told that the DPD driver would call 30 minutes before he was due at my address to let me know he was nearly there. I work a 5 minute walk from my home so figured that would be fine.
I received no phone call and as it was approaching my 1 hour delivery slot, I checked online and headed home. When I got there, the DPD van was outside my block of flats, but the tracker said he was on delivery 36 and I was delivery 39. However, by the time I got indoors (I had to use a different entrance) he had already been and a card was left for me.
I rang EE (a feat in itself as there is no option for chasing an order) and the guy I spoke to said there was nothing they could do (he did check with his manager etc, no complaint with him). I then rang DPD and there is no option to speak to someone. I downloaded the app and managed to get through to someone from there.
She informed me that DPD drivers DO NOT call before they arrive.
I had a similar issue when I tried to upgrade my phone at the end of March and ended up cancelling the upgrade because I was messed around (granted that was through EE's partners at Enjoy , hence sticking with DPD this time around)
I'm at the point now where I'm considering leaving EE altogether and seeing what Tesco Mobile can do!

DPD do not call beforehand never have and never will.
They have an app that notifies you when they are 30 minutes away and then next drop. But this won't be accurate as by the time it feeds through they could be closer than that.
This isn't EE fault.
DPD will try again tomorrow.

The mis-information IS EE's fault.
I can only go by what I am told and I was told they would call.

Must have got confused with the app notifications.
It is really down to you to make sure you are home. DPD make it easy for you by giving you an hour time slot.
