I have been offered an upgrade through affordable mobile staying on ee,  I want to keep my number that I've had  for years, is this possible as ee say I have to get a pay as you go sim transfer my number to that then back to ee

If it's truly an upgrade & not a new contract then it keeps your number by definition.
