EE FTTP, UniFi UDM-SE and EE TV Box Pro - Has anyone got live TV working without

Hi all,

I have EE Full Fibre with an Openreach ONT, an EE Smart Hub Pro 7 and an EE TV Box Pro (no aerial, all TV is streamed over the internet).

I would like to remove the EE Smart Hub and use my UniFi UDM-SE directly connected to the ONT.

I have successfully configured PPPoE on the UDM-SE and when connected directly to the ONT:

• Internet works correctly
• The UDM-SE gets a public IP address
• General internet access is fine
• The EE Smart Hub can be connected behind the UDM and still access the internet

However, live EE TV channels do not work.

The EE TV box can connect to the internet and appears to communicate with EE services, but live streaming channels fail to start.

I recently found a post describing a successful EE FTTP + EE TV setup using an EdgeRouter X with IGMP Proxy, which suggests the EE Smart Hub may not actually be required.

My questions are:

1. Has anyone successfully removed the EE Smart Hub Pro 7 and used a UniFi UDM Pro or UDM-SE directly with EE FTTP?
2. If so, what settings were required for EE TV live channels?
3. Does EE TV require specific IGMP Proxy, multicast, VLAN or DHCP settings?
4. Is there anything special that needs to be configured on the WAN side for EE TV to work?

Any advice from anyone running EE TV with a third-party router would be greatly appreciated.

@RudolphUcker - I have a UDR7/UX7 and have dabbled in this space before; you're likely to be fighting an uphill battle trying to get things working.

If you do fancy the challenge then I'd start here. Personally, I gave up in the end; I suspect things weren't playing nicely with the unmanaged switches on my network.

thanks @bobpullen .  I will take a look at the post you sent.  However, as you mention, i have tried pretty much everything (without getting into the OS/core)  and nothing seems to work.  Its as if the EE Router has to be directly exposed to the internet or it will just not work.  As an aside - irrespective of the switches - i also tried plugging it in directly to the UDM-SE and that didnt work.  Its just so weird.  Everything does work except the actual live stream of the TV channels.

But hey - thanks.  I will keep trying and hope someone has actually got it to work or has some sort of inside knowledge that highlights exactly how this stuff works and if its a lost cause.

Thanks @Chopski_ really appreciated.  When i get some time  (and patience) i will give this a go - however, both of these refer to different UNIFi devices than my UDM-SE but hopefully that doesnt matter.  Some of what is suggested i am sure i tried.

Right now i have my EE Router plugged into the ONT with the UDM-SE sitting in its DMZ and all is working fine.  The UDM-SE seems to think its directly to my service provider and behaves well.

The EE router only has the EE TV box connected to it via WiFi and works.

So right now all is working - it would just be nice to get the EE Router out of the equation.  I will keep this post updated when i can get the time (and get my EE Tv Vlan back up and running...

I have a Udm pro se all set up with my ONT connected directly to my UDM with PPPOE

the trick is to use the MAC address clone setting and use the MAC address from the EE router

then under the user name setting use

[email protected]

then enable password and set that to

BT

auto DNS

fully restart the ONT and it should work flawlessly 

I have had no issues for about 6 months doing this so I get all live channels direct on my  tv and have the ONT connection directly to my UniFi gear

Thanks. It’s been a while and I tried many configurations so can’t say 100% but I seem ro recall this was one of the first configurations I tried. If I recall I could get mostly everything working apart from the guide for the tv stations.

i notice from your post you mentioned an Apple TV. I wonder if this it why this works for you. I am using the EE set top box and it seems to me that this is where the problem lies. Eg. The EE box is specifically wanting to do some sort of negotiation/ handshake and needs the EE router to be directed connected to the ONT for that to happen (odd but only explanation I can come up with). I have tried many combinations, removed all VLANS, firewalls etc and even plugged tv box direct into UDM- SE with no joy.

for now I have a configuration working where the EE router is connected to ONT and my UDM-SE is sitting in its DMZ.  The tv set top box is connected wirelessly to the EE router.

when I find the energy to unplug it all and try again I will retrace the steps and try what you have said and repost my findings.
