Scam call offering me a 30 percent discount

ANPARKER
Visitor

Today I received a call on purportedly 020 4538 9426 from purportedly John purportedly from EE. He asked how I was today and if I wanted a 30 percent discount. The man was speaking with a South Asian accent in what sounded like a call centre.

He asked me to tell him how much I was paying each month so that I could identify myself. I declined and as he was working for EE asked him to tell me how much I was paying. He said that he needed to know to take me through security.

I declined again and he rang off.

I subsequently called 150 and reported this incident to EE. The guy I spoke to confirmed that EE had not contacted me today and that the call was a scam.

I am publishing this to the community so that other are aware of this scam.

I am writing here as an update since this issue has been ongoing for some time; I believe EE should find a solution for it.

Earlier today, I received a phone call from someone offering me a 30% discount on my EE bills. They requested my email address, but I provided a fake one. They quickly confirmed the email and placed me on hold, likely to generate a phishing link. I hung up, but they continued calling me from various London area phone numbers.

Numbers: 020 8279 4321 / 020 8275 4165 / 020 4586 5992

Exactly the same scam call (south asian accent, call center background noises). Caller asked for my monthly payment first of all which I stupidly provided, then offering a price 30% less. My suspicion was raised by the fact the call came from a mobile number. I challenged the caller on this and they hung up. The number called from was 07446581100.

I also received a heavily South Asian inflected call purporting to be from EE and similarly offering 30% discount.

Quite simply it REEKED of scamming right from the off and I merely replied that if such a discount was indeed available, I would sooner arrange it myself on the EE website (knowing full well that no such discount is available and not even bothering to check)

While there are undoubtedly more sophisticated scams around than this one, they really do stick out like a sore thumb and it is INCUMBENT on everyone to have their scam detector set to a moderately high gain - most people who fall for them do so through greed and stupidity. Don't be either greedy or stupid.
