Scam call offering me a 30 percent discount

ANPARKER
Visitor

Today I received a call on purportedly 020 4538 9426 from purportedly John purportedly from EE. He asked how I was today and if I wanted a 30 percent discount. The man was speaking with a South Asian accent in what sounded like a call centre.

He asked me to tell him how much I was paying each month so that I could identify myself. I declined and as he was working for EE asked him to tell me how much I was paying. He said that he needed to know to take me through security.

I declined again and he rang off.

I subsequently called 150 and reported this incident to EE. The guy I spoke to confirmed that EE had not contacted me today and that the call was a scam.

I am publishing this to the community so that other are aware of this scam.

They are still at it, and I got fully roped in.

I'm normally quite savvy to these calls, but the emails and whatsapp communications from them appeared legit.

They also passed a few tests such as guessing my monthly payment. I deliberately gave them a fake amount, and they seemed to know I was lying (Or maybe they just misunderstood me).

I pressed them for their locations, they gave me a legit postcode that lined with BT office (One Braham Street, London E1 8EE)

Employee id: 60023JS

Employee name: John Sam (I believe this a generic name they pass around)

They insisted on ALL me bank details to "set up my profile" for my new account to apply my "discount". Alarm bells rang because I've never had to give up my sortcode, account number, card number AND signature number. Embarrassed to say, I went along with it, however I recorded the call, because I was still unsure. They even gave me the fake delivery tracking number for my samsung watch they were sending me as a gift.

After the call, EE fraud detection rang me around an hour later and explained that a phone had been ordered on behalf of a "Hamza", NOT me. They were already trying to buy things on my profile!

EE cancelled that request. reset my profile. I immediately cancelled my bank card.

Lesson learned. BIG thanks to EE's fraud detectors for responding swiftly.

I tried to report on your link. But whatever I write in the comments. It’s says I’m not entering a valid comment.   This is way too time consuming. So won’t bother trying to help.
