BE AWARE - SCAM - Promotion on SIM ONLY pay £5 to reduce monthly SIM cost

Hi Guys,

I got a call on Thursday 1st Aug 24 from a woman claiming to be from EE. She said they were contacting all EE customers to offer a new promotion of reducing your SIM Only monthly cost.  I don't have SIM Only but my two children on my account do.  I asked if she was calling direct from EE and she said yes. I asked was there a cost associated with the promotion and she said £5 per SIM so I said no I'm not interested but who do I speak to at EE later if I want to find out more about the promotion - she hung up.

Today I checked my bank account a noticed a £10 debit under the name ORANGE. Now I have had my account with EE at the time it used to be ORANGE in 2007 - same telephone number. I have also had the same bank account / sort code since 2007. The bank looked into it and they had been able to access my online bank account and set themselves up as a Payee and make a payment of £10. I immediately deleted them as a Payee and the bank have disabled my online and telephone banking.

The bank told me the Payee had set themselves up as looking like they had been set up since 2007 - which they agreed was wierd  - they said would you have been using online banking and setting up payees in 2007  which i knew couldnt have been as I didn't have a smart phone and didn't do online banking, not only that any payments to ORANGE back then would have been via direct debit or through a card number transaction - so how did they have my sort code and account number and date I first became a customer with ORANGE which was indeed 2007 - I know this as it was the same time I moved to where I was living and before my children were born and I know I didn't have a smart phone until they were 3/4 wihich was 2012 earliest - I have always wished I had had an iphone when they were born for the photos!

This leads me to believe that they must have accessed legacy and current ORANGE /EE customer accounts to know the year I became a customer, gain access to my bank details and my phone number which are the still the same!

Check your bank accounts for any transactions from ORANGE - especially if you've had a call from someone claiming to be from EE and check the payees youve set up to see if there are any you don't recognise!

@lorrielou  I highly recommend you call customer services about this also.   You also need to change your bank password and your EE account password and any password for an account that your phone number is registered too.

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.

Thanks - Ive reported to EE and my bank have disabled my internet and phone banking while they investigate but its a good call to change all the passwords - uff what a hassle grrr... thankfully it was only £10 but given they set themselves up as a payee i imagine they would have taken more at some point!
