01438 989213 Fake call?

Received call today from 01438 989213 claiming to be EE.
Said for security would send text with pin to repeat back to show he from EE and I’m the customer.
Is this genuine? Worried it’s a scam.

When I called EE after a panic after call and they didn’t know of this number?
Is the number def step change as Google shows mix responses.

I seen that and told the advisor on the phone at the time. But they still said it was a scam which made me come here as got all confused with mis match information.
