Will number port before SIM arrives?

I just ordered a new EE SIM online and provided my PAC code to port my number to it. 

The confirmation email says my number will port within 24 hours. That's likely before the SIM arrives.

Is that how it works as it feels likely I will be left without a functional SIM for a couple of days.

@watsongm  Your number will not port until after you activate the EE sim then it takes up to 24 hours to port over.   Number ports do not happen over the weekend so if you get this sim Saturday it’ll not start until Monday and should be completed by Tuesday. 

To contact EE Customer Services dial 150 From your EE mobile or 0800 956 6000 from any other phone.

Thanks Chris. I kinda thought it would be like that, the confirmation email they sent is a bit confusing as it says "your number will port within 24 hours", leading me to think "24 hours from now". Thanks again.
