Pin and puk lock

I wanted to lock my SIM so clicked 'lock sim' in security & it asked for a "SIM pin”. I thought it could only be the PUK but that failed. I've not tried again as 3 wrong ones & it locks the phone. Should I be doing something different?

@DavidHoffman : The default SIM PIN is usually '1111'.

Thanks. I'll give it a try when I'm feeling brave - I've only 2 goes left. On that question does the phone remember my failed attempt today forever or will I get reset back to 3 attempts before blocking at some future time.
