Hi, do I need to activate the roaming service or will it automatically switch on when I arrive abroad?

Yes, if you're on contract you'll need enable your roaming ability before leaving UK by texting ROAMING to 150. Aside from that you'll need to buy any roaming passes necessary to cover your roaming charges when you arrive at your destination.
