Roaming in Germany - What is the current situation?

When I went to Germany before Covid, my phone always connected to the telekom.de network. I always got a great signal which was really fast (30 MBPS +).

Since 2021, this has changed for the worse. My phone now connects to o2-de, which often says 4G but gives me 2-3 MBPS on average. Once I had 4 bars but only about 0.05 MBPS, not even enough for Google Maps. I often find myself moved over to vodafone.de, which I have learned to be EE's backup. This seems a lot more reliable, though I am limited to Edge data. This problem seems specific to Germany, I can roam in other EU countries without issue.

I'm going to be going through Germany in a couple of weeks, so I would like to clarify the following:

1. Is manually connecting to telekom.de currently possible?

2. Does EE have any plans to let us use 4/5G on vodafone? If Telekom can't be done this would be almost as good.

3. If not what's the best way to stay connected in Germany with the current situation.

4. Are EE and Telekom.de still partners and is there a plan to re-enable this in future? They are still listed as such and Deutsch Telekom owns part of BT.

Hi @daroundtheworld

Welcome to the Community!

We want your time away to be trouble free, so it's disaapointing to hear about the trouble you're having, and I can understand your frustration. Are you able to manually switch to another network, and see if there is any improvement after doing so?

If you're not sure how to do this then let me know which device you're using, and I can run through the steps.

Rach

I’m back in Germany and my phone latches onto Vodafone - Edge. Great signal but unusable data.  I can manually select o2 but the coverage is really poor. When I was here two months ago I had 5G on all three networks including Telekom. What is wrong with EE?  Why can’t they be consistent?

Back in Germany right now and roaming is still not working properly. I cannot connect to Telekom at all and Vodafone only yields Edge. O2 does work when selected manually…

Thanks all for reporting.
Are there any EE employees or moderators etc reading this?
Is the only way to raise is via EE support usual(useless?) way?
Its pretty annoying to drive around the border in and out and keep faffing with settings while driving.

Hi @agreebisch 😊

Welcome to the EE Community!

Where in Germany was it you were visiting, and were you finding the same when travelling around, or were you largely based around a similar area?

I'm glad to hear you could get a connection on O2, but I appreciate you want this to come through reliably when on an automatic connection too.

Peter

Hi @Peter_W

Numerous people reported including myself, it is throughout Germany. Simply seems EE only has data roaming agreement with O2 but profile is configured to also connect to Vodafone EDGE.

Not sure why we need to go through this again and again. Can someone escalate this or are we here just sharing experiences without any progress?

Thanks

@ak370 I was last in Germany myself in October 2024 and Telekom was definitely working at this point, but my phone did shift around between networks depending on my location.

I've reached out to see if we can get any concrete details on the current configuration, so I'll let you know if we get an update.

Peter

I’ve been travelling around the south west and it has been the same experience everywhere. Crossing into Austria the problem disappeared till I entered Germany again. Had the same issue just before Christmas.

I can only echo what others have said. I've had a great experience with EE roaming in many European countries, but since EE dropped Telekom as partners I have always had issues all over Germany every time I have been. I often get stuck on Vodafone Edge, or even get onto O2 but they find signal and speed to be so low the network is almost unusable in many areas.

The last time I went I was waiting somewhere with great Telekom and Vodafone coverage, and no O2 coverage at all. There was supposedly WiFi but required a re-login every 5 minutes which was not practical.

So I'm sad to say I've got to the point at which I always need to have an alternative SIM or eSIM to run in addition to EE when I go to Germany, just to get a relatively solid connection.

I really do hope this can be sorted out sooner rather than later as it really does effect my ability to recommend EE to anyone who might find themselves in Germany.
