Dial the number, and after a few seconds I am cut off. I have called this number many times before

Can you call other numbers OK? Does the same thing happen on all local Portugese networks? Use a manual network search to check.

Are you on contract or PAYG? Had you used that SIM for making calls or texts in UK before you left to go abroad?

If you are on contract, did you activate roaming on your EE a/c before you left UK by texting ROAMING to 150? Having a roaming billing add-on doesn't of itself activate roaming on your a/c. Having roaming activated on your EE a/c, not just on your device, is crucial to using your contract SIM abroad.

Often just rebooting the phone is the simple remedy. Also try selecting a network manually rather than auto.

Otherwise if you are on contract you need to call CS to get your roaming activated. Try calling CS on the Freephone no. in my sig. on Skype over WiFi. It should be free.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. My UK(EE) mobile has 2 SIM cards. My normal UK one, and a Portuguese SIM(Lycamobile).
Using the UK mobile I can normally call anywhere in the world. I can call Irish landlines, but when I call mobiles, these are prefixed by 089(Vodaphone), 083(Three), 085(Eir Mobile) - is where I have trouble. The call fails on 089 mobile numbers. I got through on the other Irish networks. BUT if I call these same numbers(including 089) on my Portuguese SIM, I get through, no problem.  So there must be a problem calling the Irish Vodafone network from my UK SIM.

Cheers

I am on a contract. Have used the UK SIM in my phone everywhere in the world for many years, UK at home, or abroad.. This is a recent event. I have narrowed it down to calling Irish mobiles prefied with 089 (Vodaphone) - the call fails. Other irish networks are OK (083, 085, 087 etc). BUT if I use my Portuguese SIM (Lycamobile) I get through to 089 numbers no problem.

So where does Lyca come in that mix?

Lycamobile operates in about 20+ contries. It was handy for me when in Portugal. The SIM card is free, and you pre-pay for it in your Lycamobile account.
My UK mobile has 2 SIM slots so works out well. All I'm saying is using the Lycamobile SIM, I had no trouble phoning the Irish numbers.

I know what Lyca is but you were claiming you were calling a Lyca no. from your EE UK mobile which you're not. You just happen to have a Lyca SIM as well in your mobile, which is a red herring to your issue.

Hi there @Spudee1917

Thanks for coming here 🙂

Does the call fail to more than one mobile number on the same network? Can you send and receive texts from the numbers?

Speak to you soon 🙂

Leanne.

Have you roamed in other countries, and does the same issue persist?

Are you sure it's Vodaphone Ireland you're trying to call and not Vodafone Ireland? (Sorry, couldn't resist)

If you're confident this affects calls to certain number ranges when in a particular country, then CS may need to raise a fault ticket for further investigation - they will likely require a handful  of examples of failed calls over a 2-3 day period. Don't be too surprised if there is some resistance to this being done, but if frontline agents can't resolve during a call - it is the correct process.
