Does purchasing an add on from my existing credit count as a chargeable activity? Or would it have to be from adding new credit? Trying to make sure my number doesn't get deactivated while I'm abroad.

Yes, effectively any spending of money or credit balance.

You need to make a chargeable action like making a chargeable call or text, topping up or buying a Pack or Add-on, not just using your mins, texts or data from your pack.
