Reviving an old ish thread. It it still the case that you can’t have an eSIM if you’re on PAYG? Considering an iPhone air which is eSIM only. Just about to renew my virgin media contract and they’re offering a great sim deal so may jump ship if it can’t be done on EE.

No need - just start a new thread to ask your question. It's now been done for you.
EE do not currently offer eSIM on PAYG.
Virgin Media do lots of cross-selling with O2, just make sure their network service meets your requirements in all the locations you frequent. Coverage maps don't tell the whole story.
