I have a blackberry - I pay monthly - I only keep the phone for emergencies (calls & texts only) therefore my bill is only a couple of pounds a month - my question is do I need to upgrade my phone/sim or will it still work for the foreseeable future on 2G ? - I have no interest in using it for anything other than calls & texts.

If your Blackberry phone already works over 4G it will continue to do so.
Any 3G phone has always used 2G anytime 3G isn't available for whatever reason. With 3G switchoff, that will be a permanent thing, calls & texts will work over 2G all the time.
