Rather than add to someone else's thread, it may be more helpful to explain your issues from scratch. As a basic - does your phone show a connection to a local network in the country you're visiting? You need network coverage to make & receive calls, send & receive text messages and use mobile data.
WiFi-calling is not supported abroad.
