Are emoji's picture messgaes? 83p a picture, really?   My first EE bill after being on Vodafone for many years

@gakobek : Not if you set the Input Mode for texts as the UNICODE 16-bit alphabet.

I use Android, the option is Message Settings > Text Messages > Input mode. No idea about Apple, but in any case your phone should give an onscreen warning when the content of a message triggers a change from SMS > MMS - it's not a network function.

Crikey who still sends mms messages. You can buy an mms add-on if you need to use this service, or use one of the hundreds of data apps.
