There is no cheaper way with EE than buying the TDP of 500MB / day for £8.45 except possibly buying a local SIM.
Outside the EU, you cannot use your usual UK allowances there but will need to pay the charges or buy roaming add-ons as set out in https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/roaming-costs/countries/thailand.
Ashe is on contract, remember for him to text ROAMING to 150 before he leaves UK to ensure the roaming ability is enabled on his account.
